What's In A Name?

What the heck is WoozieLand 2001? Well, here's the story:

A long, long time ago (the summer of 1981, to be precise) there was a little quick-mart type store near our house called "Woozie's". In a cramped corner of the store they had a couple video games. Their main problem was that there were always kids crammed around them, and to play a game, you had to wait an interminably long (for a ten-year-old) time.

The owner of the store had the vision to realize that he could make a pile of money if he could get more games and serve more customers. Thus, a building right down the street became "Woozie Land", the first true video arcade I can remember. Sure, the Putt-Putt Golf and Skate World had video games, but nothing like the collection housed at Woozie Land in its prime.

There's a funny side note to this story: the first weekend that Woozie Land was open, I was in the hospital after having my appendix removed. I left the hospital the following week, and despite still being quite weak and having intermittent abdominal pain, convinced my mom to drive me down there. I think I told her "the fate of our galaxy depends on it."

So, in honor of the late, great Woozie Land arcade, my own home game room twenty years later has been christened "WoozieLand 2001". And, the fate of the galaxy still depends on the brave warriors who enter here....
