Gorf

I picked up this Gorf machine on a trip to Knoxville, TN. A guy with a billiards shop was selling a collection of machines that had built up in his warehouse over the years. This Gorf was complete, had a nice cabinet, but had a few issues.

There was no display on the monitor - it turns out the plug had come off the RGB interface board. So I plugged it back in and it worked. At least that part was easy! The next part was a bit more involved. Gorf wasn't speaking, I was getting a Bad ROM message on the self test, and a couple of sounds weren't working.

I went for the shotgun approach and bought a complete working PCB set from a local collector, Matt Adams. I also had to replace the connectors to the boards thanks to someone's bad hack job. That took care of the Bad ROM message, but the sounds were still missing. I took a quick look at the audio amp board, and saw a transistor with a broken leg. Bingo! a $0.75 replacement part from Radio Shack fixed it.

I've also done a bit of cosmetic repair: new locks for the coin door and rear doors, polishing up exposed screws and carriage bolts, replacing all the light bulbs and the lamp driver board, and tightening up the loose joystick
